As we approach key milestones in Queensland’s tourism journey, I’m pleased to share some significant updates and initiatives that are crucial for our industry's continued growth and success.

State and Federal Election Priorities
The Queensland Regional Tourism Network (QRTN) is advocating for essential changes ahead of the State and Federal elections that will directly benefit our operators and communities. At the state level, we’re calling for increased base funding to Regional Tourism Organisations (RTOs) to ensure that local government contributions are maximised, enabling us to drive more effective tourism initiatives.

By securing additional funding, we can better support the development and promotion of our regions, creating more opportunities for local businesses to thrive.

We’re also pushing for the continuation of the 'Strategic and Contestable Grants Program', which allows RTOs to partner directly with industry to deliver targeted education, strategic direction, and projects that align with the needs and opportunities identified by our operators and council partners. This program ensures that even when direct grants aren’t available, we can still secure the financial support needed to pursue critical initiatives that benefit our tourism community.

Additionally, we’re advocating for a new 'Product and Industry Development Fund'. Recognising that getting started is often the hardest part for new operators, this fund would provide essential support for the development of new tourism products, ensuring that our region remains competitive and innovative. This is particularly important as we work towards the ambitious goals set out in Towards Tourism 2032, which call for more accommodation options, improved transport, and new attractions to meet growing visitor demand.

On a national level, we’re aligned with the Queensland Tourism Industry Council (QTIC) in advocating for programs that attract international working holidaymakers, which are vital for many operators, especially in regions with seasonal peaks. We’re also seeking expanded capacity-building and skills development programs for tourism small businesses, ensuring that they have the resources and knowledge needed to grow and succeed in a competitive market.

We’re advocating for continued investment in First Nations tourism, which plays a crucial role in enriching our cultural offerings and attracting visitors seeking authentic experiences. Additionally, we’re supporting a $70 million competitive grants scheme for investment in iconic regional attractions, designed to create the next generation of must-visit destinations that will draw both domestic and international visitors to our regions.

Finally, we recognise the growing concern around rising insurance costs for tourism operators. We are advocating for a policy framework that could help reduce these costs and increase the availability of essential insurance products, providing much-needed relief and security for our industry.

Board Member Recruitment
Queensland Country Tourism is at an exciting crossroads, and we are seeking expressions of interest for new board members to join our team. As one of the 13 Regional Tourism Organisations in Queensland, our geographical footprint has expanded, opening up transformative opportunities for our region. With the recent launch of our 2024-2026 Destination Management Plan and an upcoming brand refresh, we are looking for forward-thinking individuals who are passionate about driving the strategic direction of our organisation. This is a unique opportunity to play a pivotal role in shaping the future of tourism in Queensland Country, especially as we prepare for the 2032 Olympics and Paralympics. The QCT Board is a skills based board that provides governance and strategic leadership to Queensland Country Tourism and is comprised of industry, government and business leaders with a wide range of skills and backgrounds. If you have the experience and commitment to contribute to our vibrant tourism community, I encourage you to apply.

Together, through strategic advocacy and strong leadership, we can ensure that Queensland Country remains at the forefront of the tourism industry, providing exceptional experiences for visitors and continued success for our businesses.
